DIELECTRIC PROFILING

Dielectric Profiling (DP) is a tool used for the continuous quality assessment of asphalt pavement compaction at the time of paving by measuring the pavement dielectric constant. It can be conducted along wheel paths, centerline, pavement joints or anywhere an agency wants instantaneous and continuous readings.

Converting the measured dielectric constant to the asphalt mixture density is accomplished through measuring the dielectric constant on laboratory compacted specimens and relating the measured dielectric constant to the specimen density at different compaction levels. The alternative is to correlate with conventional field cores. DP is a non-destructive testing system that provides real-time field density assessments that can be used to adjust mix and construction compaction methods to ensure optimal strategies are implemented throughout the project.
